Oceanside QB Heuer flirting with more records

Oceanside senior quarterback Tommy Heuer tied and broke records en route to winning a county championship, and he’s threatening other individual marks.

His 10-yard pass to senior wideout Dylan Judd that put the Sailors up 7-0 in the title game against Freeport tied him with Carey’s Ray Catapano (2013) for second most single-season touchdown passes in Nassau at 36.

But the lone TD pass Heuer threw the week before in a semifinal win against Farmingdale was more personal.

It broke his school’s record of 35 that his brother Tyler held since 2010.

Heuer said he and his brother had previously gone back and forth about the record-breaker. “But he’s been very supportive throughout the whole season about the record and stuff,” he added. “He’s been a really big supporter. I still look up to him.”

Oceanside head coach Rob Blount coached both signal callers, who he called great competitors that studied extensively to improve. On the field, though, they were almost opposites.

“Tyler was more of a physical presence, where he tried to run people over and rushed for about 800 yards as a senior; whereas Tommy is more cerebral and tries to distribute the ball to other players, passing first; running second,” he said.

Last year, Heuer posted 14 touchdowns passes and seven interceptions and threw for 1,376 yards, but this season, playing in two extra postseason games, he has 2,661 yards passing, two interceptions and 36 touchdown tosses.

Blount attributes the second-year starter’s transformation to his experience, offseason studies and ability to handle an expanded playbook and check plays, as well as to the talent around him.

Junior receiver Jake Lazzaro has snatched 14 touchdowns passes, senior running back Derek Cruz has a school-record 69 receptions, while Judd and senior wideout Bernie Diaz have combined for 15 touchdown catches. Throughout, Linemen Vincent Schell (6-5, 290) and fellow senior Mike Scibelli (6-3, 300) have protected the 6-foot-1 quarterback’s blindside.

Heuer will get a final crack at changing the record books when Oceanside faces Lindenhurst in the Long Island Class I championship game Sunday. He’s two touchdowns shy of tying Nassau’s record of 38 that Joe Capobianco of Lawrence set in 2012. A four-touchdown performance would tie him with Sayville’s Jack Coan, who in 2014 threw 40, the Island record.

A fifth touchdown pass would make him the all-time leader, and he’d join four other quarterbacks who have as many record-setting touchdown passes in a playoff game, including Oceanside’s Tom Capone in 2012.

Keep this in mind: Heuer threw six touchdown passes in three consecutive games this season.
