When Fanyelle Mael, LMHC, CASAC, opened Woodmere Mental Health Counseling last year, she had a particular niche in mind. Focus on the difficulties common to families in this day and age — substance addiction, and working out situations often caused by the use of social media. Mael’s youth, specialized training, and the fact that she comes from a family of medical professionals, all play a significant roll in her unique treatment approach.

Unlike decades ago, she points out, when an issue was left at school, adolescents, teens and young adults can now be barraged with taunts or rejection through social media. Parents often struggle with how to help their child, or handle things. Those involved require new and specific coping skills, and ways to fend off situational depression and anxiety.

Fanyelle Mael, who is licensed in mental health counseling, and credentialed in New York State by OASAS (Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services), takes the holistic approach — the treatment of the whole person, taking into account mental and social factors. She will often include parents, a school counselor, and/or a psychiatrist, in her treatment plan. She credits her mother, Dr. Suzanne Sirota Rozenberg, a doctor of osteopathic medicine) and dermatologist, who has guided her to look at the person as a whole.

As a psychotherapist, Mael helps individuals with issues like depression, anxiety, life transitions, obsessive behavior, relationship concerns, trauma, career goals, stress management, overcoming fears, and mood disorders. She provides a judgment-free safe environment, using a number of therapeutic modalities.

Mael earned a master’s degree in mental counseling at Queens College, and did her clinical training at Montefiore Medical Center in an outpatient opioids treatment program in the Bronx. As a certified provider for OASAS, she conducts impaired driving assessments and evaluations, and is an approved provider for online therapy through Talkspace.
