Stepping Back in Time

Long Island Fair
The Long Island Fair, Old Bethpage Village’s authentic recreation of a 19th century county fair, is always a treasured fall tradition that continues a 173-year tradition. It’s a welcome respite from the fast pace of modern life, offering a glimpse of days gone with appeal for all ages. Stilt walkers traverse the grounds, and entertainers enthrall families with puppets, juggling and storytelling, along with musicians and dancers. Livestock shows, tractor rides, Civil War reenactments, and Rough Rider demonstrations whisk riders back to another era. Also see animals at the livestock barn, take part in corn husking and potato sack races, and test your skill and strength at the two-person cross-cut sawing in friendly competition. And, of course, baseball enthusiasts will enjoy the the Old Time Base Ball League’s end-of-season matches throughout the weekend.
Friday, Sept. 25, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 26-27, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Also Oct. 2-4. $12, $8 seniors and children ages 5-12. Old Bethpage Village Restoration, Round Swamp Rd., Old Bethpage. (516) 572-8401 or www.lifair.org.

Rock ‘n Roll Tribute
Some say rock ‘n roll was never the same after the unexpected death of musical legends Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper (Jiles Richardson). Their timeless sound takes on new life when John Mueller’s Winter Dance Party re-creates all the excitement of their final tour. The exuberant show, an authentic version of the trio’s final performance on Feb. 2, 1959, at the legendary Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa, includes all the hit songs of the ‘50s era.
Saturday, Sept. 26, 5 p.m. Harry Chapin Lakeside Theatre, Eisenhower Park, East Meadow. (516) 572-0200.
