New York Court of Appeals Chief Judge Janet DiFiore administered the oath of office to swear Nassau District Attorney Madeline Singas into office on Monday. The ceremony, held at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City, featured several guest speakers. Singas’s family and friends attended the ceremony, with several family members in town from Greece.

“Thank you and welcome to my big, fat Greek inauguration,” Singas joked to laughter and applause. “I’ve always wanted to say that.”

Singas delivered her inaugural address to a room full of supporters. She thanked several mentors, including Queens DA Richard Brown and U.S. Rep. Kathleen Rice. They, Singas said, “paved the way for me.” And the new D.A. thanked the Nassau County Police Department and her team of prosecutors for continuing to “do what’s right and keeping each Nassau County citizen safe.”

Singas also thanked voters, the Nassau Democratic and Republican parties, and with an emotional tone, her two children, Deme and Billy, and husband, Theo Apostolou. She greeted and thanked her sister, Dr. Effie Singas, who gave a speech earlier in the night, as well as her extended family, speaking to them in Greek.

Singas is a first-generation Greek-American. She pointed out her parents’ and family’s bravery for immigrating to the United States in the hope of building a better life. “My aunts and uncles immigrated to this country from Greece, and the first thing they did was join a union,” she said. “That allowed them to get work, own homes and educate their children, so thank you to the labor movement. I’ll never forget those diligent, hard-working people.”

She thanked her parents, who, she said, “I’m sure are with us tonight. When I think of my parents I don’t think of loss; I think about how fortunate I am to have had two such remarkable people in my life who loved and supported me one thousand percent.”
