Deadly hit-and-run in Hempstead

The Nassau County Police Department is investigating a hit-and-run car accident that killed a pedestrian crossing the street in Hempstead on Dec. 1.

According to detectives, Jeremias Chavarria, 39, of Hempstead, was crossing Fulton Avenue near Bennett Avenue at around 1:17 a.m. when he was struck by a 2000 black BMW, which was traveling west in the eastbound lane.

The vehicle — with the registration number GEU3305 — fled the scene of the accident west of Peninsula Boulevard, police said. Chavarria was transported by the Long Island Jewish Ambulance to Nassau University Medical Center before being pronounced dead at 1:40 a.m, according to officials.
