Lakeview Fire Department ex-chief, Joseph Mastriano, a member of the department for over 50 years, died July 27.

Mastriano was married to Jo-An Turecamo with whom he had two sons, Joseph and Nicholas, and three grandchildren: Maddie, Joseph and Zoie.

Born in Queens, Mastriano later came to West Hempstead and established a life there. He joined the Lakeview Fire Department and ultimately became a lieutenant, a captain and a chief. Mastriano was employed as a supervisor with the Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office, and loved fishing, hunting, crossword puzzles and being a firefighter. “He was known for his love for the fire department and the community, and for helping others,” said his son Nicholas. “Also his quick wit, sense of humor, and contagious laugh.”

Joe would do whatever he could to bring a sense of peace to others, and adored his grandchildren most of all. He was known as “Doc” to other members of the department due to his uncanny knowledge and skills in the field, and was likewise termed “Phantom” because he would appear at a fire/emergency call, provide needed services, and disappear without seeking any acknowledgement for his contributions.

Mastriano was buried at Holy Rood Cemetery last Saturday.
