Pitching, defense lead West Hempstead

West Hempstead coach Chris Van Kovics often speaks about the importance of his team following the blueprint when it comes to putting itself in position to succeed. When it comes to softball, the plan is a simple one; throw strikes and play defense.

With a pair of capable pitchers, and a stingy defense flashing leather behind them, the Rams are following the blueprint to a tee. With an 8-2 win over Valley Stream South, West Hempstead improved to 8-2 (6-2 in Conference AB-V). Junior Brianna White tossed a three-hitter and struck out seven to earn the win. Senior Jackie Christenson knocked in a pair of runs during a six-run sixth inning.

Van Kovics is pleased with his team’s performance. “It always comes down to pitching and defense,” he said. “We’ve done a great job of not giving team’s extra outs, and have stayed away from big innings. Our pitchers don’t overpower opponents, but they are always around the plate, and the defense is making the plays behind them.”

The tandem of White and Amanda Malone has been excellent in the circle for the Rams. In an 8-3 win over a solid Manhasset team, Malone went the distance and struck out five batters. White has done a great job of keeping hitters off-balance. She’s held opponents to two or fewer runs in three of her outings.

Emily Weinstein has been a strong battery mate for the two hurlers. The sophomore backstop has improved considerably as the year has gone on. She’s also become a threat at the plate. In a rout of Roosevelt, Weinstein was 3-for-5 with four runs scored.

Christenson has been clutch at the plate, and her defense at the hot corner has been off the charts. Batting in the three-hole, a spot generally reserved for power-hitters, hasn’t stopped Christenson from bunting, slapping, and doing whatever it takes to get the job done. Van Kovics believes her work with the glove is as good as he’s seen from a third baseman during his time at West Hempstead.

Angela Graci has been as good as advertised. Her softball IQ is very high, and she gives the Rams versatility by being able to play multiple positions and hit out of various spots in the batting order. In a win over Westbury, Graci was 2-for-2 with a triple and four runs scored.

When Lisette Paloma gets on base, the Rams are tough to keep off the scoreboard. The freshman shortstop/outfielder has been outstanding at working out walks and her slapping her way on base from the leadoff slot. Once she’s on board, her speed and athleticism give opponent’s fits.

Van Kovics would like to see a strong finish from his team. “It would be nice to exact a little revenge on the teams that beat us,” Van Kovics said. “It’s all about getting better each day, and taking things a game at a time.”

The Rams welcome in Locust Valley this Friday at 4:30 p.m.
