State Assemblyman Brian Curran (R-Lynbrook) announced that he and Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos (R-Rockville Centre) had secured over $2.7 million in road repair funds for the Town of Hempstead, plus additional funds for its villages, which will ultimately provide Malverne with at least $137,000 in road repair aid.

Curran also said that another $403,000 in Winter Recovery Funds has been set aside for the Town of Hempstead, plus additional funds for villages, which would mean another $19,000 for Malverne.

The Town of Hempstead has sole discretion over how it will distribute the money among its hamlets and villages, and the amount allocated for West Hempstead was not announced.

The aid for both the road repair and winter recovery comes from the state’s Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program — a state reimbursement program. According to the Department of Transportation’s description of the program, “Capital projects are first-instance funded by individual municipalities. The municipality then requests reimbursement from the State for its local cash expenditures made for highway-related capital projects. Municipalities must certify on their reimbursement request forms that project disbursements were made during the specified authorized reimbursement period, Their projects have a minimum ten-year service life.”

CHIPS funding for the Town of Hempstead, and its villages, was reported as follows: Town of Hempstead, $2,718,094.18; Village of Freeport, $476,345.78; Village of Lynbrook, $213,326.12; Village of East Rockaway, $111,039.14; Village of Malverne, $137,346.94; Village of Rockville Centre, $297,279.81; and Village of Valley Stream, $431,047.29.

Curran’s office reported that the $403,613 in winter recovery funds would be distributed to the villages as follows: Village of Freeport, $66,786.05; Village of Lynbrook, $29,847.11; Village of East Rockaway, $15,549.15; Village of Malverne, $19,318.68; Village of Rockville Centre, $41,535.71; and Village of Valley Stream, $60,717.88.
