The plan to correct Lakeview's brown water problem

Posted

County Legislator Seial Bynoe asked New York American Water for a timeline for its plan to address Lakeview’s water problem. The following is a preliminary schedule of events sent to her by the water company earlier this week.

Work in progress

Plant #2, Potable Iron Removal Plant
The plant, built on Chautauqua Avenue in Lakeview, is awaiting Nassau County Health Department approval to begin operations. The water company said it estimated that the plant would be running by April 15.

Customer home water-quality testing
The company’s Water Quality Department has begun contacting customers, requesting that they test their water. Since earlier this week, the company had scheduled 12 appointments and was continuing its outreach, it said. The first set of appointments are scheduled for April 18, after the company’s annual water main flushing.

Water main replacements

The following Lakeview streets are targeted for water main replacement.

  • Smith Lane. A private road owned by homeowners, which is causing delays in approval, the water company reported to Bynoe. The company has received approval from the Health Department to proceed with the replacement, and is awaiting legislative assistance to gain homeowners’ approval to begin the work.
  • Coda Court. Replacement of this main, which passes beneath the Southern State Parkway, will affect a number of surrounding streets, including Taylor Road, a dead-end street that will be “looped” — or continued into other pipes — to enable better flow.
  • Donlon Avenue. Mains on Donlon will be replaced from a starting point under the parkway to Emerson Drive.
  • Emerson Drive. Main replacement here will continue to Mohawk Road East.

The water company reported in its action plan that the design of its main replacement was submitted to the Health Department and is awaiting approval. Afterward, the designs will be sent to the state Department of Transportation, because of the work beneath the Southern State Parkway.

Additional work

  • Sunapee Road. Pipe work for Sunapee Road, including Arnold Road, and up to Mohawk Road West, is currently being designed and is scheduled to be submitted to the county Health Department in the next several weeks. The project will likely be started in December or January.

Main replacement plans for next year

  • New York American Water will compile data from leaks, water quality analysis, age and material of pipe, fire department pressure and customer feedback to determine which mains will be replaced in 2017.
  • Schedule to be determined in August 2016
