Valley Stream Historical Society learns how to salsa

'It's real hot stuff'

About 40 people filled the Firemen’s Field clubhouse on Sept. 21 for a salsa lesson from professional entertainer and Historical Society President Guy Ferrara.

A makeshift sound system — made by pointing a microphone at an old stereo — supplied the music needed for salsa dancing, as Ferrara, 80, strut himself across the dance floor with his partner, Janice Calandrino — demonstrating basic steps for onlookers.

“It’s real hot stuff,” he hollered after demonstrating one of his signature moves.

Attendees laughed and joked with one another, while following Ferrara’s lead.

The next meeting of the Historical Society will feature a lecture by Dr. Joseph Scelsa, founder and president of the Italian American Museum of New York, on Oct. 19 at 7:15 p.m. at the clubhouse.
