Maheen Khan, valedictorian of West Hempstead High School’s Class of 2016, has been named a Gates Millennium Scholar.

To qualify for the scholarship, Maheen was evaluated on her academic achievement, community service and leadership potential demonstrated throughout her school career.

According to its official website, the Gates Millennium Scholars Program, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, was established in 1999 to offer outstanding minority students a chance to complete an undergraduate college education in any discipline area of interest. The scholarship provides recipients with leadership development opportunities, mentoring, academic and social support, as well as financial support.

This is the second consecutive year that West Hempstead High School has had a Gates Millennium Scholar. The district congratulates Maheen on her tremendous accomplishment and wishes her the best of luck in her future
