W.H. resident sets example for success at Keene State

West Hempstead resident and Keene State College sophomore Emily Fennes is making the most of her college career.

Feenes — who is majoring in elementary special education and psychology — stressed the importance of public liberal arts education.

“My experience at Keene State has been just what I was hoping for. I have taken many interesting courses that have provided me with knowledge in other areas of study, for a well-rounded academic experience,” Fennes said. “I have made important connections with faculty who are very supportive and have also made great friends. I wanted the opportunity to live on a college campus, because college is more than just taking classes – it’s also important to learn what you are capable of when you’re independent.”

Fennes was born and raised in West Hempstead. Her parents currently live there with her younger brother and sister.

Fennes is the president of the Class of 2016 and the secretary for Circle K International, a collegiate and university community service and leadership development organization.

Fennes has advice for current high school students who are considering college: “It’s a personal choice. Some people want to go where friends are going. Step back and decide what’s best for you – you will make new friends and have new experiences. Decide using the right reasons you’ll never look back.”
