Where to commemorate 9/11

As is tradition in both Malverne and West Hempstead, the two communities will each hold their own 9/11 ceremonies on the evening of September 11, both of which are open to the public.

In addition, the Lakeview Fire Department will be hosting a series of events, which includes a blood drive honoring its Ex-Chief, Robert DeAngelis, who perished in the towers.

Details on all September 11 events are as follows:


In Malverne

The village’s candlelight ceremony, An Evening of Remembrance, will honor those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. The ceremony begins at 8:00 p.m. at the September 11th monument near the gazebo in Reese Park (the Malverne train station).

In West Hempstead
A September 11 remembrance ceremony will be held at West Hempstead’s newly-installed 9/11 Memorial, located at Hall’s Pond Park in West Hempstead (the corner of Hempstead Avenue and Nassau Blvd.) The event begins at 7 p.m.

A memorial service for all victims of 9/11 will be held in the morning at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, located at 24 Westminster Road in West Hempstead. A breakfast the Lakeview Volunteer Fire Department follows immediately after. The firehouse is located at 895 Woodfield Road in West Hempstead.

In Lakeview
Blood Drive in memory of Ex-Chief Robert J. DeAngelis Jr.
Long Island Blood Services will set up at the Lakeview Volunteer Fire Department on Sunday, September 11 from 9 a.m. through 3:00 pm for a day-long blood drive honoring the memory of the fire department’s beloved ex-chief. The Lakeview Fire Department is located at 895 Woodfield Road in West Hempstead.
