Election 2015

Who will be the next Town of Hempstead supervisor?

Posted

The race for Town of Hempstead supervisor pits longtime Councilman Anthony Santino, a self-described conservative Republican from East Rockaway, against Bellmore-based community and gun-control activist Rita Kestenbaum, a Democrat.

The two are locked in a battle for the supervisor’s post now held by Kate Murray, a Republican from Levittown, who is running for Nassau County district attorney against career prosecutor Madeline Singas, a Democrat.

Santino is touting his more than three decades of government service as he campaigns. Meanwhile, Kestenbaum, who formed the Carol Kestenbaum Foundation for girls after her daughter was murdered in 2007 while away at college, presents herself as a government outsider, saying she is running a grass-roots campaign.

The Herald asked each of the candidates four questions to get their take on the issues.

Herald: Hempstead has long been committed to environmental protection. If elected, what specific measures or programs could and would you undertake to expand on its green legacy?
