Student Council decorated the hallways for Hewlett High School’s Fall Festival last week. Pumpkins and haystacks adorned the entranceway, and streamers hung from the ceilings. Hewlett High students took part in Spirit Week to boost school spirit before Halloween. On Monday, students wore camouflage; Tuesday’s theme was twin day-students matched with their friends. The big event was Wednesday’s costume day. Students had the option to participate in a costume contest, with prizes such as raffles from local businesses being awarded for the best group costume, most creative costume, best character costume and funniest costume.

The theater students have been preparing tirelessly for their production of “Bullets Over Broadway.” The show will be premiering on Wednesday, Nov. 14 at 4:30 p.m. The other show times are Friday, Nov. 16th at 7 p.m., and Saturday, Nov. 17 at 2 and 7 p.m.

“By the end of the rehearsals, we are like a family,” said Tyler Walter who plays Warner Purcell in the show. “Between the orchestra, directors, cast and crew, you all miss it at the end because you all worked really hard together for months. Personally I feel like the play gives you something to do — it’s more than putting on a musical. It’s a family.”

The first Model Congress of the year took place on Nov. 2 and 3 at East Meadow High School with a travel theme. Each of the eight high schools that took part were given a different country theme — Hewlett’s theme was France. The other participating schools included New Rochelle, Oceanside, Lawrence, Long Beach, Herricks, and Seaford/Wantagh joined together to create one Congress. Asma Rasheed, the Agenda Chair for Hewlett said, “Model Congress is one of the best opportunities we have at Hewlett. You can debate on any topic that you are interested in and make connections with students in your own school as well as other schools.”

On Nov. 5, the Leaders Club held its annual Fall Bash. The Leaders host this event in as a social event for the high school’s Special Education students. They invite students from other schools to participate as well.

Co-Vice Presidents Chelsea May and Logan Fliegel said that the Fall Bash “is a fun night filled with dancing and talking to not only the special needs kids from Hewlett but also many other schools.” The dance was a great success this year.

While most of the fall sports finished their seasons, the Hewlett football team played against Plainedge in a playoff game on Nov. 3. Despite a great season, they lost 41-0.

With the fall season coming to a close, students are looking forward to the beginning of the winter sports season and the continuation of Hewlett’s great activities and clubs.
