Nassau County police have confirmed details of a car chase on Tuesday evening that began in Hempstead and ended in Valley Stream, with Hempstead police reportedly firing a single gunshot outside of LIJ Valley Stream Hospital, striking one of the suspects involved.

The series of incidents reportedly began at 2:20 p.m. when Hempstead police attempted to stop a white BMW with three occupants for traffic violations near Sycamore Avenue in Hempstead. The BMW then took off westbound on the Southern State Parkway, exiting on Corona Avenue and striking multiple vehicles at Blakeman Drive and Franklin Avenue.

The driver then reportedly began driving in reverse toward the pursuing Hempstead officer, at which point he fired a single gunshot, striking the driver. One of the passengers then got out of the car and was apprehended on the scene.

After, police say the driver continued to head east before crashing into a street sign on Primrose Place, at which point he and the remaining passenger ran off as multiple police agencies, including members from the Nassau County and Malverne police departments, formed a perimeter to capture the remaining suspects.

The remaining passenger was arrested on Primrose Place shortly after exiting the BMW, while the driver was found roughly 20 minutes later in the backyard of a home on Evergreen Avenue in West Hempstead. He reportedly resisted arrest, leading to a Nassau County police officer suffering a broken hand.

The driver, who police identified as Kashawn Watts-Bryant, 34, of Uniondale was found with a bag of roughly 300 oxycodone pills, and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of the gunshot wound. He was scheduled to be arraigned on charges of second-degree assault and third-degree possession of a controlled substance when medically practical.
