The Malverne Police Department reported a bus crash that involved several children on Wednesday morning at the intersection of Horton Street and Cornwell Avenue in Malverne.

According to local residents, the children had special needs and were headed to James A. Dever School in Valley Stream when the mini-bus crashed into a tree at approximately 7:45 a.m. Police said that three children were taken to a local hospital where they were treated for minor injuries. The bus driver was taken to South Nassau Communities Hospital, locals said.

In a statement from Valley Stream Union Free School District 13, the district said, "Immediately upon becoming aware of the incident, district officials contacted the families of all students aboard the bus. As a precaution, three students were taken to a local hospital. The safety of our students continues to be the district's highest priority, and we continue to stay in close communication with those families affected."

Police said the investigation was ongoing. The Malverne Fire Department, along with local residents, also responded to the crash to help children off the bus. During Malverne’s village board meeting that evening, Malverne Fire Department Chief Michael Gildea said that all of the children had their seatbelt on. “Obviously, that’s always important when you’re traveling in a vehicle,” he said, as he reminded parents to make sure their children understand the importance of bus safety.
