Loop Parkway to close overnight on Wednesday

Posted

The State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation today announced that motorists should expect an overnight closure assisted by the State Department of Transportation on the southbound Meadowbrook State Parkway in the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County.

On Wednesday, June 26, all southbound lanes will be closed from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. between Merrick Road (exit M9) and Loop Parkway (exit M10). This will be a single night closure. Northbound lanes will remain open.

A detour is available via the Wantagh State Parkway southbound to Ocean Parkway westbound to Meadowbrook Parkway northbound to exit M10 for Loop Parkway or the Long Beach Bridge (Long Beach Boulevard connecting the City of Long Beach and the Village of Island Park) for access to the Long Beach barrier island.

Electronic message signs will be in the area to alert and direct motorists. As with most projects, work may be cancelled, postponed or prolonged due to inclement weather.

This closure will provide a safe work zone as crews resurface the pavement and install lane markings. This is part of the $3.9 million Jones Beach Gateway Project announced earlier this year which is demolishing the abandoned Jones Beach State Park toll plaza, building a new monumental gateway sign to welcome beachgoers, and reconstructing the entrance ramp to Loop Parkway from the southbound Meadowbrook Parkway.

Motorists are urged to slow down and safely move over when approaching roadside vehicles displaying red, white, blue, amber or green lights, including maintenance and construction vehicles in work zones. Motorists are reminded that fines are doubled for speeding in work zones. In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver’s license.
