A Nassau County police officer was hospitalized after a pickup truck slammed into the back of his cruiser in Seaford Friday morning.

The crash happened in the westbound lanes of Sunrise Highway, near the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway, at 5:42 a.m., while the officer was helping a disabled motorist with a broken axle. According to police, the truck, a 2015 Dodge, slammed into a 7th Precinct patrol SUV.

Acting Nassau County Police Commissioner Pat Ryder said the officer — a 23-year veteran of the force whom Ryder did not identify — was expected to recover. He was ending his night shift when he pulled up behind the disabled motorist to help. Officials said he experienced pain and bruising in his legs and head after the crash, and was transported to Nassau University Medical Center.

The officer is a member of the Air Force Reserves, and is scheduled to be deployed in two weeks.

Ryder commended him for his bravery. “Police work is dangerous,” he said. “We're out there 24 hours a day, in all weather conditions, serving the public.”

Police say no criminality was involved in the incident.
