New York American Water invest $660K in Malverne

New York American Water recently announced that it is investing $660,000 to install new eight-inch ductile iron water mains along three stretches of road in Malverne. The project will include the replacement of approximately 3,300 feet of six-inch water mains installed between 1924 and 1936, nine fire hydrants and 100 service lines. The company said it is confident that the main replacement project will improve water quality for residents in the village, and increase water flows for commercial use and firefighting.

“Nothing is more important than high-quality drinking water — it’s why New York American Water prides itself on its level of infrastructure investment,” said Carmen Tierno, the company’s president, in a statement. “Water infrastructure across Long Island is aging, and it is crucial that we, as a company, stay ahead of the curve. We do this by focusing on the areas of greatest need within our service territory. This allows us to provide the highest possible impact on water quality and service reliability for the community.”

The scheduled main replacement project started on Tuesday, at Eimer Avenue between Franklin Avenue and Alnwick Road, and Wagg Avenue between Franklin Avenue and Alnwick Road. The third road on Broadway between Nottingham Road and Eimer Avenue, will start construction on April 5. The entire project is expected to be complete in approximately six weeks.

This project is also being coordinated with the village, and Malverne’s Road Construction Project team will complete final road restoration. Sections of the streets where construction is taking place may be closed to traffic during work hours: 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. For the safety of residents and employees, NYAW advises that pedestrians and drivers take caution while in the vicinity of work sites.

As for other projects in the village, NYAW had plans to replace water mains on Hempstead Avenue, which runs 5,800 feet from its northeast corner at Atlas Court, to its southern corner at Franklin Avenue, in 2016. However, the project was delayed.

“Portions of the Hempstead Avenue water main replacement project are scheduled to start over the next couple of months,” said John Kilpatrick, the company’s engineering manager, in a statement. “The project will comprise drilling a new main under the Long Island Railroad tracks, and we are currently working with the LIRR and the Village of Malverne on final permits and clearance to start work.”
