Liz Dion and Kelly Barry will run uncontested in this year’s school board election, Board of Education president John O’Shea announced during a budget meeting at South Side High School on Monday.

Dion, a board member for nine years who currently serves as the board’s vice president, will retain her seat, while Barry is set to replace Mark Masin, who chose not to run for re-election. He has served on the board for 15 years, and served as its president before O’Shea.

“We deal with really difficult issues every day, and I believe in the [education] system,” Dion told the Herald. “I look forward to the next three years.”

Barry, a social studies teacher at Hauppauge High School for 17 years, has lived in Rockville Centre for 15 years. A mother of three Floyd B. Watson Elementary School students, she said her passion for education motivated her to run.

“I am committed to working hard and collaboratively with my fellow board members to do what is best for all of the children in our district,” she said in an email.

Each year, winners of the election begin serving on July 1.
