The New York State Education Department last month designated South Side High School as one of 185 Rewards Schools for the 2016-17 school year.

Reward Schools demonstrate either high academic achievement or the most progress with minimal gaps in student achievement between certain populations of students, according to the Education Department’s website.

The 185 recipients comprised 18 public charter schools, 79 New York City public schools and 88 other public schools throughout the state. “These schools serve as models to other schools in the State to inspire them to achieve a high level of accomplishment and improvement,” New York State Education Commissioner MaryElllen Elia said.

Chris Pellettieri, assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction for the Rockville Centre School District, presented the certificate at the Board of Education’s public works session on June 20.

During the 2015-16 school year, South Side High School had a 97 percent graduation rate. In addition, 99.6 percent of graduates received a Regents diploma and 86 percent of graduates received a Regents diploma with advanced designation.
