Brookside Elementary School second graders recently embarked on a unique excursion to Baldwin High School, where they tackled a series of math challenges.
High school teachers Miguelina Ortiz and Rina Adams, along with their Algebra II Honors class, teamed up with second grade teachers Kristin Maldonado, Lauren Maywald, and Morgan Maus for a Learning2Learn excursion. The students worked together to measure the length of the Baldwin Bruin logo across the high school field.
The collaborations comes after the young mathematicians were inspired after viewing the high school’s new track and field on the district’s website.
“Math activities like this one, that is inquiry based and driven by student curiosity, just makes the learning about measurement that much more meaningful and engaging,” Maywald wrote in a news release.
Students determined the end zone spans 24 meters and the bruin measures 48 meters. Afterwards, students tested their speed by racing high school students in a 20-meter dash.
