Covid continues to close schools in Elmont

Sewanhaka High School remained closed through Tuesday, after a student tested positive for the coronavirus, and several classes at Elmont elementary schools had to quarantine last week.

The students and staff members at Sewanhaka High School had to work remotely during the closure, Superintendent James Grossane said in an announcement on the Sewanhaka Central High School District’s website last week, and any student participating in the district’s Career and Technical Education program, which is based at Sewanhaka High School, had to remain at their home school and participate in the program remotely.

Students at the Stewart Manor and Covert Avenue schools in Elmont also had to quarantine last week after coming in contact with individuals who had tested positive for the virus. No student or staff member had tested positive in these cases, however, Superintendent Kenneth Rosner wrote in an announcement on Nov. 25.

He said the district will continue to work closely with the Nassau County Department of Health, and take all the necessary precautions “to ensure the health and safety of our school community.”

“I am confident our approach to addressing the safety of students and staff during this pandemic will continue to serve the entire community well,” Rosner said.
