John Podolski, incumbent
My name is John Podolski and I am running for re-election to the Bellmore Board of Fire Commissioners.
I have been a resident of Bellmore since 1972 and have been an active member of various Bellmore community organizations.
I am a member of the Bellmore Fire Department for over 30 years. I am currently a member of Engine Company #2. I have held numerous positions within Engine Company #2, as well as in other community organizations.
My experience as the Procurement Officer for the Nassau County Board of Elections for over 20 years ,along with my time as a fire commissioner gives me unique insight on purchasing needs, cost effectiveness and the need to provide top notch fire protection, while always being cognizant of the impact on Bellmore’s taxpayers.
In the last five years of my term, we have secured a grant that will provide the latest technology in radio communications to our fire fighters. This provides a line of communication from the command post to the firefighters to ensure their safety in the line of duty.
We also passed a bond issue to construct a new training facility on Royle Street. This facility will give our firefighters the ability to train within our fire district with simulated scenarios.
The fiscal and firematic needs of the community and the evolution of new fire protection technology, is something that I embrace. It is my pledge to this community to always put our firefighters and your safety as my main goal, while being fiscally responsible.
I would appreciate your support as it will an honor to continue to serve this community once again.
Michael Irving
My name is Michael Irving, and I am asking for your support and vote in the upcoming election to serve on the Board of Bellmore Fire Commissioners on Dec. 13.
Growing up in Bellmore, I watched my father and uncle serve as active members of the Bellmore Fire Department. I joined the Junior Firefighters Squad at the age of 14. I quickly took on a leadership role becoming Lieutenant and later Captain of the squad.
When I turned 18, I became a firefighter and shortly after an Emergency Medical Technician. I took on other leadership roles by being elected as Lieutenant and Captain of Ladder Truck 606. In 2009 and 2020 I was elected to the position of Chief of Department. I have served on numerous committees and held several other roles within the BFD.
I am no stranger to challenges. While serving as Chief of Department in 2020 we were faced with the Covid-19 pandemic. I led the department through this time where we had to quickly pivot and adapt to the needs of the community while adhering to the regulations set forth by the government. I am a career firefighter with the FDNY with more than 23 years of experience.
I am a Mepham High School Class of 1995 graduate, and my wife and I are lifelong Bellmore residents. We decided to raise our family in our hometown due to the love we have for the community.
With 27 years of service to Bellmore, I would like to continue my service by serving as a commissioner. I am committed to the community's safety, while being mindful of budget and tax concerns.

The Bellmore Fire Department will have its election next week for a commissioner seat. The vote is slated to take place at the Bellmore Fire Department Headquarters on Pettit Avenue, from 2 to 9 p.m, on Dec. 13.
Incumbent commissioner John Podolski is seeking re-election, and being opposed by Michael Irving. Both longtime firefighters with extensive careers, they both wrote the Herald in order to share their stance as to why they’re seeking the seat, and what they hope to see done.
