Q: Is there anything that I should be worried about with the hotter temperatures for my pets during the summer?

Posted

A: The summer is here and that means warmer temperatures and longer days.  It is the perfect combination to head out and go for that relaxing walk or lounge in the yard.  But there are some things to remember when it comes to the rising temperatures of summer and our pets.

It is extremely important to make sure that your pet has access to water and shade at all times.  While getting some sun is great for our pets, making sure they don’t overheat will be a necessity.  Brachycephalic breeds, such as bulldogs, would be best keeping their time outside minimal especially if there is a heat wave.  Older pets also would be better off to be kept in a temperature controlled environment instead of being outside for long lengths of time.

If you are taking your pet for a drive in the car, remember that they should not be left alone in the car for any length of time in the summer.  If the car is turned off and it’s a hot day, the temperature in the car can become unbearable for a pet and lead to heat stroke and death.

Choose cooler days to spend a longer time outside than on scorching hot days.  Just like people need to stay in the cooler temperatures during heat waves, so do our pets.
