Snowfall hits Lynbrook, East Rockaway

An overnight snowstorm dropped three to six inches of snow across Long Island, including in Lynbrook and East Rockaway, which both had school closures on Friday.

East Rockaway Mayor Bruno Romano said the village's Department of Public Works pre-treated the streets in preparation for the storm and was prepared for the worst, but relieved it was mild.

"We remind all of our residents to please make sure that vehicles are off the streets," he said, "especially during these snowstorms so we are able to properly plow the streets. Please do not shovel snow into the streets which complicates snow removal and also creates  safety issues."

Requests for comment from Lynbrook Mayor Alan Beach were not returned as of noon on Friday.

The Lynbrook and East Rockaway school districts announced Thursday that their buildings would be closed on Friday ahead of the expected winter storm.

"Due to the impending weather forecast, the Lynbrook Schools will be closed tomorrow, Friday, Jan. 7," Lynbrook Superintendent Dr. Melissa Burak wrote  in a letter on the district's website. " I hope everyone stays safe."

In a letter on its website, East Rockaway school officials noted that the closure came due to the expected weather conditions and amid a staffing shortage due to the impact of Covid-19.

"This will be a regular snow day," the note read, "and no remote instruction will take place."
