Cedarhurst native Ruth Puterman Greenwald, 98

Ruth Puterman Greenwald lived in Cedarhurst for 57 years and worked until she was 89. She died on Oct. 27 at 98.

Born in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn in 1915 to Russian immigrants, Sam and Hannah Goldberg, Greenwald’s schooling took her to New York University, where she met Gerald Greenwald. The married couple moved to Cedarhurst in 1951.

Gerald died six years later. Greenwald then married Lou Puterman. After his death, Greenwald worked as a third grade teacher for nearly 20 years at P.S. 215 in Far Rockaway.

“Ruth will be remembered for her colorful, dynamic personality and dress,” said Barbara Greenwald. “She overcame many hardships, was tenacious, hardworking and embraced life through it all.”

After her retirement from teaching, Greenwald worked in the Concerts and Lectures Department at the Metropolitan Museum of Art for 18 years, until she was 89. In 2008, she moved to Boulder, Colo.

Greenwald is survived by her sons, Alan, Jonathan and David Greenwald, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held graveside at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Glendale on Oct. 30. There was also a shiva minyan in Manhattan on that Wednesday.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be sent in Greenwald’s honor to the National Council of Jewish Women, Peninsula Section at 342 Central Ave., Lawrence, NY 11559.
