A senior living community, Esplanade of Woodmere at, 130 Irving Place, which specializes in memory care services, had owners and operators, David and Alexander Scharf, cut the grand opening ribbon on Jan. 18.

David shared some family and business history and thanked those involved with Esplanade and with the ceremony.

Since the first Scharf family senior residence was founded in the 1950s, “Much has changed since then,” David said, “but what has stayed the same is our dedication to the highest level of care, and achieving our vision to create an active, dignified experience to our residents.”

The building was formerly a nursing facility, but after several months of renovation, it will open back up as a community for older people with a distinctive dementia care program for Nassau County seniors with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia.

“They have been working on this project for a long time,” said David Friedman, president of the Hewlett-Woodmere Business Association. “It’s a beautiful facility and will take care of the needs of the memory impaired residents and their families.”

Esplanade includes a kosher kitchen, kosher dining, brightly lit dining areas, on-site therapy, housekeeping and laundry services, scheduled transportation to outings and memory care programming. A memory care coordinator will lead daily activities such as discussion groups, exercise classes, films, baking, gardening, music and art, to engage residents.

The multi-level building has three themed lounges on each floor where seniors can relax and socialize, as well as a secure courtyard with peaceful sitting areas. Esplanade community members may live in a private studio or one-bedroom apartment with full bathrooms and call and monitoring systems.

“We are excited to offer best-in-class memory care and can’t wait to make every day special for our new residents,” Regional Director of Operations Jordan Blumberg said. “This new option for Nassau County area seniors raises the bar for memory care.”
