Hello Herald readers, I’m the summer intern

HAFTR graduate Dena Gershkovich write for her hometown newspaper

This summer, I am serving as the college intern for the Nassau Herald, my hometown newspaper.

I grew up in Woodmere and currently live in Hewlett. I’m 21 years old.
A junior at the University of Maryland, I am taking a double major in dietetics and journalism with hopes of becoming a registered dietitian-nutritionist and nutrition writer.

I’m a 2015 graduate of the Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns High School, and wrote the Herald’s HAFTR Highlights column for three years. After graduating HAFTR, I spent a gap year at Midreshet Torah V’ Avodah in Jerusalem, Israel, and studied Judaism, hiked and volunteered.

Currently I serve as the editor-in-chief of The Campus Trainer, a university student-run online publication that focuses on fitness, health and general well being. I have been writing nutrition-related articles, features and profiles for other UMD publications since starting college.

I also write a personal nutrition blog called The Artsy Palate and post tips and insights for how to stay healthy in college (and beyond!) as well as original recipes. For fun, I enjoy doing hair for weddings, bar-mitzvahs and other events (Instagram: @hair_by_dena), drawing, reading, bike riding, meeting new people, and, of course, writing.

I am looking forward to everything I’m going to learn about journalism and local news this summer as an intern for the Nassau Herald.
