Nassau needs fact-based leadership

To the Editor:

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman’s unwarranted assertions of authority deserve condemnation, but fault, it seems, must be extended to his “legal counsel,” who suggested that school boards can decide on “constitutional rights to reject mask mandates.”

For counsel to pretend ignorance of the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Jacobson v. Massachusetts, in 1905, which upheld states’ authority to enforce compulsory vaccination laws, and contained Justice John Marshall Harlan’s concept of “real liberty for all,” suggests demagoguery. Nassau needs fact-based leadership.
