Tigers are roaring through the activities

Mask on! Game on! On March 19, the Lawrence Woodmere Academy Tigers hosted the Portledge School for the varsity boys’ PSAA Championship Match. In a thrilling contest, both teams showcased their unique talents as it came down to the wire to determine a winner.

LWA Senior Daniel Carrión hit an unbelievable contested three-point shot from the corner to tie the game at 61-61 with just seconds left. However, Portledge marched down the court with force-free throws. Portledge won 64-61. Pol Canals, Nabi Ndiaye and Daniel Carrión were named to the All-Conference Team after playing exceptionally throughout the season.

Rising stars Aiden Best and Raphael Tawil also proved to be a force on the court and showed strong promise to create fear among next year’s adversaries. Also, Senior Captain Michael Coletta anchored the team through discipline and brought energy to the erratic season. Although the outcome was not the desired one, it was an incredible achievement in itself to compete in the championship and league play as the student-athletes came together and displayed resilience under the restraining circumstances of the pandemic.

The varsity team would like to give a huge shout-out and thank you to both Athletic Director David O’Keeffe for doing everything he could to make the season happen and Luke Davis, head of LWA Admissions for his excellent camera work throughout the season to broadcast the games via Facebook Livestream.

The girls’ varsity volleyball season is underway. After having the season postponed in the fall, there has been much anticipation for the Lady Tigers to get back on the court to display their talent as a team. First-time coach, Howard Mo, is terrifically excited about the season. Senior Kyra Milord said that, “it is crazy to think that we were not going to have a season and I can speak for the whole team that is nice to just be on the court again regardless of the circumstances we may face.”

Along with the sports, seniors in the upper school have much to look forward to. As the end of the school year approaches and the veil of Covid starts to lift, the class of 2021 has planned some fun community events.

On April 21, the seniors will be at Chipotle on Rockaway Turnpike where proceeds from the days’ purchases will be graciously donated to the school for enrichment activities. In addition, the Senior Car Wash is planned for May 27.  Mark your calendar and come by to support the class of 2021 and give your auto a “spa treatment.”

Community is very important at LWA and as tradition has called for in the past, the seniors will be joined by the junior class at the end-of-the-year school formal at the Sands Beach Club.

The forever dreamed of graduation in the beautiful building of Hessel Hall will take place after safety logistics have been worked out. In a time that has seemed to deprive us of so much this year, it seems the seniors will be able to end their upper school journey in the way they intended.

Lawrence Woodmere Academy would like to wish everybody a Happy Passover, a joyous Easter, and most certainly a fun-filled April Fools with many jokes, pranks, and laughs.

As always, stay safe. Stay healthy. Stay strong.
