Far Rockaway resident Schlomo Schreiber was the first person to cross the finish line of the 48th annual Long Island Marathon on May 1.

Leiba Rimler, of Brooklyn, was the first woman to complete the 26.2-mile route that wends its way across a portion of Nassau County and starts and ends in Eisenhower Park in East Meadow.

Nearly 2,500 runners took part in the race that serves as a qualifier for marathons such as the one in Boston. Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder tweeted that last Sunday was a “Great day for the Long Island Marathon.

After noting the race winners Ryder wrote: “The real winners are the running community that had a fabulous day thanks to the protection provided by the brave men and women of the NCPD.”
