The Nassau County First Squad reports the arrest of a Copiague man for an incident that occurred on July 11 at 10:20 p.m. in Freeport.

According to detectives, Freeport police officers observed a 2007 Nissan that drove through a steady red light at the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and South Main Street.

The Freeport officers activated their emergency lights and were able to make a Vehicle and Traffic Law stop at the intersection of Bedell Street and Atlantic Avenue, where the defendant, Lloyd Berger, 60, of 107 Wartburg Ave. in Copiague, had struck a fence.

As officers approached the vehicle, Berger ignored their verbal commands and had to deploy their electronic control device on Berger, who then put his vehicle in reverse, drove southbound on Bedell Street, and turned onto East Bedell Street.

There he exited his vehicle and jumped into the water. Freeport officers, with the assistance of Nassau County police officers on Marine Boat 6, took the defendant into custody without incident after he swam to the rear of 289 Buffalo Avenue.

Defendant Berger is charged with third-degree criminal possession of stolen property, and third-degree unauthorized use of a vehicle. He was arraigned on July 12 at First District Court, 99 Main Street, Hempstead.

Subsequent to the investigation by the First Squad it was determined that Berger had been previously arrested on July 10 in Freeport. Berger was charged with five counts of fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, two counts of third-degree unauthorized use of a vehicle, and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. He was issued an Appearance Ticket and must return on July 25 to First District Court.
