Seven emergency units responded to what originally was an alert for an overturned boat near the Atlantic Beach Bridge at 9:30 a.m. on May 7, according to Atlantic Beach Rescue Assistant Chief Jonathan Kohan.

“Upon further investigation it was ascertained that a sailboat had run aground inside Banniseter Creek,” Kohan told the Herald in an email. A search was conducted and it was discovered that the boat docked at the Lawrence Yacht & Country Club marina had broken away from its anchor and was unoccupied, Nassau police said. It was then secured, Kohan said.

The Coast Guard, the Fire Department of New York, and the Inwood, Lawrence-Cedarhurst and Long Beach fire departments, along with the Nassau County police aviation bureau were at the scene.

One traffic lane was closed temporarily on the Nassau Expressway, the roadway was reopened.
