A South Hempstead woman and her 7-year-old son were struck by an alleged drunken driver on the northbound Meadowbrook Parkway over the weekend, and the mother is dead and her son suffered injuries but is alive, according to New York state police.

Nicole Pollock, 26, of Freeport was driving a 2012 Nissan Rogue around midnight on Saturday at 80 to 90 mph when she hit the rear of the 2006 Kia driven by Lissette Quintanilla, 39, state police said. Quintanilla’s vehicle careered across all three lanes of the parkway, off the road, onto the right shoulder and through the guardrail, slamming into a tree.

Quintanilla was rushed to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, where she died. Her son was taken to Cohen Children’s Medical Center in Queens. According to reports, the boy underwent surgery on his arm and will be hospitalized for a few days.

Pollock was also hospitalized, but her injuries have not been reported. She was released from the hospital on Sunday, according to police, and was arrested and charged with drunken driving and first- and-second-degree vehicular manslaughter.

She was also in possession of marijuana, police said. According to reports, Pollock shouted at police at the scene of the crash and tried to walk away. Authorities had to run after her. She fought with the officers and slipped out of handcuffs before she was arrested.

She was arraigned on Feb. 3 in Nassau County District Court. At press time, Pollock had not made cash bail of $100,000. She was due back in court in Mineola on Wednesday.

The northbound lanes of the Meadowbrook Parkway, between Babylon Turnpike and the Southern State Parkway at Exit M7, were shut down for eight hours early Sunday morning, starting at 12:02 a.m., according to police.

Pollock’s defense attorney, Leo Yakubov, was unavailable for comment. The Pollock family and Quintanilla were also unavailable for comment.

This is a developing story.
