Hempstead man arrested in Oceanside after high-speed chase

A Hempstead man was arrested in Oceanside Saturday and charged with multiple crimes after leading police on a high-speed chase and intentionally injuring two officers by colliding with their car.

According to the Nassau County Police Department, narcotics and vice squad detectives were on an investigation at Long Beach Road and Waukena Avenue when they arrested Romaine Robinson, 25. They activated their emergency lights and conducted a vehicle and traffic law stop of a 2011 gray Porsche, which was driven by Robinson. When the detectives approached the vehicle, Robinson sped off and refused to stop.

Robinson drove northbound on Long Beach Road and was later found on Mahland and Kenneth Place. He then drove his vehicle in reverse at a high rate of speed toward the officers’ cars, intentionally causing a collision and injuring the officers.

According to police, Robinson refused to comply with multiple verbal commands to exit his vehicle and resisted arrest, but was placed into custody after a brief struggle. Police found him to be in possession of a white rock substance that was believed to be cocaine.

Both officers were transported to a local hospital for treatment.  The officers suffered injuries to their head, neck and face causing substantial pain. One of the officers also suffered a fracture to his right hand.

Robinson was charged with two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, fourth- and fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, four counts of second-degree assault, second-degree criminal mischief, reckless endangerment, tampering with physical evidence and resisting arrest.

He was arraigned in court in Mineola on Sunday.
