The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory as snow was expected to fall — and did — across most of Long Island from Sunday at 1 p.m. to Monday at 4 a.m.

As 3 to 5 inches are forecast for most of the region with up to 6 inches inland.

The snow was expected to possibly briefly start as rain or a mix of rain and snow.

Peak snowfall rates — half to 1 inch per hour at times.

Temperatures were expected to drop into the teens inland and 20 degrees closer to the coastline late Sunday night and early Monday morning.

These temperatures could result in an areas of black ice on untreated surfaces causing slippery and possible hazardious conditions.

The City of Long Beach said early Sunday afternoon that city crews were making final preparations for the winter storm that will be impacting the area. It said all of its snow removal equipment is operational and it has an ample supply of sand and salt to keep the streets safe.

The city said that, if possible, to refrain from travel during the storm to permit ease of plowing operations and lessen dangerous conditions for all.
