Hempstead Mayor Waylyn Hobbs Jr. captured another four-year term with an Election Day victory over challenger Kevin Boone, a village trustee.

Hobbs will now serve his second term. He was first elected in 2021 when Hobbs was a Hempstead trustee. He has served in varied civic posts, including commissioner of the Hempdtead Housing Authority, village code enforcement supervisor and a volunteer firefighter.

He also is the senior pastor for the Coney Island Catherdral in Brooklyn, where Hobbs carries the honorific of bishop.

“I couldn’t be more pleased and excited,” he said in a news release “I am pleased that the residents have faith in me, and I am excited to get going on projects that matter to them. We just received a $10 million grant for downtown revitalization from Gov. Kathy Hochul that will help us to make downtown more pedestrian friendly. Our goal is to give not only visitors a reason to come here, but make things more accessible for residents.”

Also in the works for the village is a complete revamping of Mirschel Park that will include a year-round recreational center, a roof-top community garden and other amenities that the park lacked.

“We’re all about providing services and amenities to our residents and I am determined that every day of my next term will be a ‘Good day in the Village of Hempstead,’" Hobbs said in the release. " We’re going to bring more businesses to the village and increase housing that enables our veterans, seniors and young people to stay here.“
