After Bessie Lamonica lost her son, Rudy, a gifted soccer player, to bone cancer at age 17, she dedicated the rest of her life to ensuring that others could play the sport he enjoyed. She spent decades volunteering for the Oceanside United Soccer Club and the Long Island Junior Soccer League in his memory, and helped form the first girls’ soccer team in Oceanside.

Island Park Chamber of Commerce shows that #IPCares

On Saturday, the Island Park Chamber of Commerce handed out dozens of gift certificates to local businesses for residents as part of its #IPCares initiative. The event was a stimulus program where the chamber awarded about $3,000 in the form of $50 gift certificates and other grants to residents, which are redeemable at more than 25 Island Park businesses.
