Voters at the Glen Cove City School District approved the $118.1 million budget Tuesday night for the 2025–26 school year by a vote of 850 to 389.
The district’s 2025-26 budget of $118.1 Million is an increase of $4.7 million over the current spending plan. The tax levy is approximately $79.6 million, an increase of 2.981 percent, which falls below the district’s tax cap. According to enrollment data compiled by the state in October, Glen Cove has 3,154 students, which means the district would spend roughly $37,451 per student if enrollment remains stable.
In addition to approving the budget, residents elected two board members. Brett Miller received 771 votes and Lia Leone receiving 596 votes. David Huggins received 483 votes. There were 23 write in votes.
This is the last budget vote for School Superintendent Maria Rianna Rianna, who will retire in June after serving 12 years in the district. Effective July 1, she will replace Lorna Lewis who has announced her retirement after spending five years as Malverne superintendent. Rianna said the board will officially approve the results Wednesday, and will take effect July 1.
"Purchase orders will be approved for materials, a preparation for September is underway, and we're beginning to prepare for the '25-'26 school year," Rianna said. "I appreciate the support of the community over the years, and we did a lot together. I appreciate their support for all that we have accomplished. I look forward to the staff continuing a positive direction for students in the future."
