Mount Sinai South Nassau in Oceanside to dedicate golf outing to its staff for Covid-19 heroics

Posted

In recognition and celebration of its heroic response to the Covid-19 pandemic and patient surge, Mount Sinai South Nassau’s staff of 3,565 doctors, nurses and allied staff has been named the honoree of the hospital’s 36th annual golf outing, which will benefit the hospital’s Covid-19 Relief Fund.

Revamped and rescheduled to Sept. 14, the outing will be held at two venues: The Seawane Club in Hewlett Harbor and the Rockway Hunting Club in Lawrence. Golfing is permitted under state guidelines with the right safety precautions in place and the outing will adhere to the state Department of Health’s guidelines.

A series of precautions will be in place to ensure the safety of golfers and to maintain social distancing, including one group per tee box and green; driver-only golf carts; no caddies and elimination of high-touch areas like sand bunker rakes. All participants will have the choice of a shotgun start at 8 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. at either club.

“Our golf tournament is a widely anticipated event and a major fundraiser for the hospital,” MSSN President and CEO Richard Murphy said. “We are thrilled to announce the rescheduled date and offer our supporters an opportunity to safely enjoy a round of golf while honoring the heroic efforts of all the Mount Sinai South Nassau employees who answered the call of duty during the Covid-19 pandemic, which hit our community so hard. I invite golf lovers throughout Long Island to join us as we celebrate and thank the Mount Sinai South Nassau healthcare team.”

The South Shore of Long Island has been one of the hardest hit areas during the pandemic. MSSN surged capacity to more than 500 beds to care for the seriously ill patients who streamed into its Emergency Department during March, April and May. The full spectrum of the hospital’s clinical and administrative departments was completely overhauled to execute delivery of specialized, critical medical care tailored specifically to the needs of more than 1,380 coronavirus patients it admitted and treated with serious and life-threatening illness.

Anthony Cancellieri,  the vice chairman of the hospital’s board of directors, and Jeffrey Greenfield, a member of its Advisory Board and managing member of the NGL Group, LLC insurance company, are the co-chairs of the golf outing, which raised nearly $600,000  in 2019, a new record for the annual outing. This year’s outing will be a more individually catered golfing experience that adheres to the current safety guidelines set by the state. There will be one foursome starting on each hole. While there will be enhanced food and beverages on the courses, there will be no formal dinner as there was in past years.

The outing is spearheaded by a 40-member golf committee that includes leading local business and civic leaders and dozens of local businesses, who support the outing through their sponsorships.  For more information about sponsorship packages, or to register, call (516) 377-5360 or email tmatejka@snch.org.
