New York American Water is investing $700,000 to install a new water main along Bennett Street, Lindbergh Avenue and Byrd Street in Oceanside.

The project began on Feb. 19, and will replace 2,500 feet of the aging water main with an 8-inch ductile iron main. The project will also replace five fire hydrants and 75 utility-owned service lines.

“New York American Water continues to make important investments in our infrastructure,” the utility’s Manager of Engineering John Kilpatrick said, according to a release. “Replacement of aging water mains is important to improve water quality and reliability of service for our customers.”

The project will take place along Bennett Street, from Oceanside Road to Lindbergh Avenue; Lindbergh Avenue, from Bennett Avenue to Oceanside Road; and Byrd Street, from Oceanside Road to Lindbergh Avenue. Work is expected to take about six weeks to complete. Final street restoration will be finished within the Town of Hempstead’s road construction project.

Work will take place between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Residents should note that sections of the street where construction is taking place might be closed to traffic during working hours. NYAW will coordinate with residents directly to minimize disruptions.

The utility advised pedestrians and drivers take caution while in the vicinity of work sites. Any resident with a concern or question about the planned work is encouraged to call NYAW’s customer service center at (877) 426-6999.
