Oceanside, Island Park host Memorial Day gatherings

One year after the coronavirus caused cancellations of Memorial Day gatherings, Oceanside and Island Park residents, elected officials, emergency workers and veterans organizations got together on Monday for in-person festivities.

The Village of Island Park had to move its parade from Saturday to Monday because of rain At 10 a.m., the parade began as officials and military personnel  marched toward  the Long Island Rail Road parking lot across the street from Village Hall. Robert Nunez servede as grand marshal and Bob Wilson as the master of ceremonies.

The Island Park American Legion hosted the parade in  conjunction with village officlas. Mayor Michael McGinty and the board of trustees were also in attendance to honor the past heroes of the village.

Oceanside’s festivities saw the Fire Department arrive with two trucks and an honor guard for the event. Officials, residents, veterans organizations, school board members and emergency service workers gathered together at the Schoolhouse Green.
