Temple Avodah of Oceanside's golf outing was a hole-in-one

Golf carts drove across the green at the Seawane Club in Hewlett Harbor on a sun-soaked summer afternoon on Aug. 22, occupied by foursomes from Temple Avodah who prepared to tee off at its annual golf outing.

The event was organized by the temple’s Men’s Club in conjunction with its Golf Committee and the Sisterhood of Temple Avodah.

“It went wonderful,” said Stewart Gubenko, who co-chairs the Golf Committee along with Rick Fromewick and is a member of the temple’s board of directors. “The weather was magnificent.”

The outing was in memory of late Temple Avodah Treasurer Bob Harwood, who is Gubenko’s daughter-in-law’s father. Harwood died in 2016 after spending many years being in charge of the temple’s finances. Proceeds from the event went to the temple, and organizing the outing was a team effort, Gubenko said, while praising the sisterhood for its help.

“Everybody participated,” Gubenko said. “What I’ve tried to establish in temple, is I’m trying to create a collaborative environment where everybody puts forth their effort to do things together.”

About 75 golfers hit the links at the event, while 125 people attended dinner at the club. The event began with breakfast at 10:30 a.m., which was followed by a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. and dinner at 5:30. The top three golfers were awarded prizes and recognized at dinner, as were the winners of the closest-to-the-hole and closest-to-the-line challenges that took place.

“It was an amazing event,” Gubenko said. “It was a great outpouring of love by the members of the temple and everybody associated with it.”
