A giant male humpback whale was found washed ashore at Lido Beach early Monday morning, according to Nassau County Police.

A police spokesman at Mineola headquarters said officers received a call about the whale just before 6 am.

Police said the whale appeared to have no wounds or entanglements, but a necropsy is to be performed Tuesday and the whale’s body will be buried at a not-yet-undecided,  spot.

Hempstead town Supervisor Don Clavin estimated that the whale is about 35 feet long.

Clavin said the whale is the largest that has washed ashore on the South Shore in years.

Police said a giant crane will be used to haul the whale up the beach ahead of high tide,

"It's sad," Clavin said. "It is a creature of nature."I hope we can find out the reason"why it died.
