Hollywood Health Club in Long Beach returns after 20 years

More than 20 years after selling their beloved gym to New York Sports Club, the owners of Hollywood Health Club reopened their doors earlier this year in hopes of regaining the momentum and acclaim they once had in the neighborhood.

Original owner Steve Dimond, who opened the club in 1986, returned with two new partners -- his son Nevin and Paul Martin, a local business owner. The club, located at 265 E. Park Ave., was renovated and reopened in the midst of the pandemic.

“I always said if New York Sports Club or Hollywood was available, prior to selling to it, and I was at the right age and it was the right time, it would’ve been a dream of mine to run a gym,” Nevin said. “It just so happens now, almost 20 years later, it basically became a reality.”

The gym’s reopening looks much different than it did 20 years ago. With covid regulations in place, all patrons must wear masks and have their temperatures checked upon arrival. The owners have also installed plastic barriers between cardio machines and created six small personalized Smartfit workout rooms that have the Peleton App. They plan on expanding in the upcoming months but said they have had an “incredible” reception thus far.

“I could not be happier with the reception,” Nevin said. “As far as the look of the place and just the entire feel of having Hollywood back.”

The club has eight certified fitness trainers for personalized sessions and four full-time staff members along with four part-time staff members work to keep the spaces clean.

The owners have also partnered with Skudin Swim to provide classes in the swimming pool, which they plan to move to the beach in the summer. They will bring aerobic and spin classes. They will also open the rooftop to provide outdoor classes during the warmer months. Memberships range from $39.95 to $49.95.
