Long Beach schools to close for 14 days because of rising Covid-19 cases

All Long Beach schools will be closed for 14 days because of rising Covid-19 cases within the district, school officials announced Wednesday afternoon.

Dr. Jennifer Gallagher, the Long Beach School District superintendent, said in an email that over the past week the district has had 11 positive Covid-19 cases "among students and staff."

"The cases required the quarantine of a larger number of students and staff members," she said, noting the district's transportation department "was particularly hard hit."

"Today, we received some additional notifications that made it really impossible for us to continue to operate safely," Gallagher said.

The district sent home supplies and devices with students Wednesday, including at the elementary level, "so the transition will be smooth," the superintendent said.

Gallagher said she hopes classes will resume Nov. 12.
