Long Beach officials and guests gathered on the boardwalk last weekend to re-name the lifeguard pavilion in honor of the Carbona family, which donated $300,000 for the construction of the facility.  The Carbona name will be on the pavilion. The purchase would give him the right to have his name, his family name or the name of another family member on the pavilion for 50 years.

John A. Carbona and members of his family lived in Long Beach for decades. John was a lifeguard and recently told City Council members that his years growing up in Long Beach were the most memorable of his life. He now resides in Dallas, Tx. He recently stepped down as CEO of AveXis, in Dallas, but will remain a company director. The company, whch Carbona was instrumental in founding, advanced the development of treatment of spinal muscular atrophy.
