An 18-year-old male from Queens died and several others were rescued Thursday night from Monroe Boulevard beach in Long Beach after entering the water, while lifeguards were off duty.

According to Long Beach Fire Department Commissioner Scott Kemins, they received a call at 6:55 p.m. about multiple people in distress. The lifeguard emergency crew responded immediately with the fire department aiding them several minutes later.

Kemins said a total of nine people were removed from the water, while the 18-year-old victim was transported to the Mount Sinai South Nassau Emergency Department at Long Beach, where he was pronounced dead after being in cardiac arrest. The man’s name is currently being withheld, according to a Long Beach Police Department spokesman.

Three others were transported to MSSN in Oceanside and treated for minor injuries. The others refused medical attention and one firefighter was also transported to the MSSN in Long Beach for evaluation.

The Island Park Volunteer Fire Department, Point Lookout Lido Fire Department and Oceanside Fire District assisted with transporting patients and standing by for additional emergency calls. All fire department operations were under the command of Richard DiGiacomo, chief of the Long Beach Fire Department.

Kemin praised the emergency crews for their efforts and stressed that people should not be in the water, while lifeguards are not on duty.

“That water requires a lot of respect,” Kemins said.
